Evaluation

The way in which the visual communication has met the needs of the brief is that I have made a typography poster, which I have included only type and with this I set a quote that I found and thought was quite a good one that people could relate to well. I believe the strengths of my poster for this project is the way that I have used the typeface. I have used 2 typefaces within this project, one is a preset on InDesign which was Gill Sans in Light and the other one which is the word UNIQUE is a typeface called Bebas, which I downloaded. I also think that the way that I have set out the text is what makes the poster stand out, as there is nothing else on the poster, this needed to be perfectly laid out, in line and symmetrical. The weakness that I think this poster might have is the placing of the name, I tried a few places this could go and I feel that where I put it finally is good, but I found that quite difficult in trying to see where this would look the best. The way that this poster could be mis-read or mis-understood, is that people may be slightly offended that the past part 'just like everyone else' is there, some may believe that they deserve more than others because they are 'unique' or 'alternative' but like this poster says, everyone is unique.. no one is above anyone else is what I believe this says, everyone is equal. I think that a way I could improve or develop this piece more is to be more experimental with typefaces, using and trying more adventurous ones.

My timekeeping throughout this project was good, I gave my self time to find a quote, lyric or poem that I was happy with and that I could develop into a typography poster, then setting my self a good amount of time to make posters, trying a couple of different quotes. My research in this project was ok, I feel I did enough to see what could be done with a poster of this kind, as I have done research into typography posters for a previous project, I found it quite easy to find what I needed specifically. For a few experimentation's through the project I just tried 2 quotes to make into a type poster, of which both worked well, but one came first to the other, looking better, simpler and more to my style. Designing the poster and doing the research for this project is what I have enjoyed the most, I like seeing visually exciting things in front of me instead of having to read through paragraphs and paragraphs, this to me is a better way of learning, lots of writing is daunting. The part that I enjoyed the least was the knowing of having around 5 projects having to be handed in at the same time, I found that I could juggle the projects quite well, but that was through organization, if I hadn't sorted my files and folders out before hand I don't think that it would of been quite so easy. It was a good test for my organization skills! I worked best when I knew where I was and when I had set myself a certain amount of time for each task, so I knew what was left to do and what was good enough to a standard I was happy with, this was when I worked best because I felt I was on top of the project.

Development of typographic poster

Im going to show here my development with making the ideas for my poster. I am just going to do lots of different ideas that experiment with the many ways that I can use the text.

I quite like going simple, so I think I might do a few illustrations to match the quote that I have chosen to go for.

For my first attempt at a few designs I have chosen this quote:

Finding the perfect typeface is like finding true love,
discouraging when you don't, sublime when you do.

sadly, for this quote I don't know who said it, but I love the quote so much I really wanted to use it.
I think its beautiful and links perfectly to type and life in general.

This is my first idea for the poster. I have simply just played around with the typeface "Helvetica Neue' within the family of the fonts. (Ultralight, Light and Italics) Using colour to make certain words more valuable. I'm going to continue making other design, do some illustrations to try and make this my own and in my style, as this type of thing has been done plenty of times, I think that I need to do something that fits in with my work.
I also need to get away from this typeface also, I use it quite alot and I think that it would be good for me to go for a wider view on other more different typefaces to what I am used to and get them to work for me within this project.

----------------------

I have started some new designs and decided to change my quote as I thought that there was alot more that I could do with the words. I think there may of been a few too many words to play around with in the previous quote.

This quote is:

'Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else'
Margaret Mead

Here are a few screenshots of my development for this next idea.

I thought that the block colour of the black looked quite good, but then I put the other text around the main feature of the piece and I don't think it works as well any more.
I am going to experiment a little more and change things slightly.
I want to add some illustration to it too, to show the humorous side to this quote.

Attempt one of this quote.

Attempt two of this quote.
I have added the name of the person who it came from, quotation marks.

Chosen brief and research

The brief that I have chosen to do along side the Turner Contemporary brief, is part 2, which is:

Undertake any small typographic project that you think will show of your skills. You make use imagery but typography must be the significant part.

This could be anything you choose, such as; a simple layout, set a poem or lyric, a typographic poster, a logo.

-----------------------

I have looked online for some inspiration and I have come across a site called: http://www.lyricsandtype.com/index.php?id=1 which has typography set using a lyric. From this site you can go to other artists and designers, I searched my way through some of these designers and looked mainly at their typography work.

http://www.timbasmits.com/illustration
By looking through them, I found this piece of work which I thought was really clever and I like the colour scheme. The combination of illustration with the text I really liked and as I have used illustration in the past with a project, I found I enjoyed combining the two.

This poster I quite liked the childish nature of it. It was like it should be placed in a nursery but I really liked the design around the words.
For this project, I know that the main feature is going to the the typography, but I want to include a little illustration to combine it all together,  I think this will keep it in my style.

-----------------

I have been looking alot into the quote or lyric that I could use, as I think this is a big part of the piece.

A few that I found are found from diarys, online and from films that I watch and hear things.

- 'Tea to the English is really a picnic indoors' Alice Walker

- 'Finding the perfect typeface is like finding true love, discouraging when you don't, sublime when you do.' Unknown

- 'I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each' T. S. Eliot

- 'To be married to a wife who can set type is happiness indeed' Walter Tracy

- 'Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore' Judy Garland (Dorothy Gale)

- 'Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death and as sweet as love.' Turkish proverb

- 'Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you were born to stand out' What a girl wants

- 'Don't forget - I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her' Notting Hill

- 'Forever is a long time and time has a way of changing' The Fox and the Hound

- 'Did you know that dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish?' from www.onelinerz.net

-----------

I have found a site that has made posters using quotes from movies.

http://creativeoverflow.net/20-memorable-quotes-from-famous-movies/
The Dark Knight, 2008

Although the text in this poster isn't the most prominent part, I really liked the colour and the way that the image has been set. The way the text also has been set is really simple and interesting and fits in perfectly with the style of the piece as a whole.

http://creativeoverflow.net/20-memorable-quotes-from-famous-movies/
What I liked about this poster was that part of the text was the first thing you see, the part that people could possibly relate to more rather than the whole quote. I'm not so keen on the background (screwed up paper) but I think the simplicty theme, black white and grey works really well. I am going to relate this in my piece.

http://creativeoverflow.net/20-memorable-quotes-from-famous-movies/

With this piece, I really like the way that the illustration and the text has the same amount of viewing. I feel that it all has equal amounts of attention when I first looked at this. My brief is to make the text the most important part on the page, so with this I am going to experikent with my own illustration but as a style I am more simple with designing, and hand-drawn.

http://www.thefoxisblack.com/
I found this piece of work on Pinterest. I was looking through a number of design boards that have been posted by people around the world from different design backgrounds. I think although that this isn't they style of design I would personally make, I think that they way the type has been set and the typeface that has been used is fitting to the theme and the words which it says. I usually go for a plain and simple white background with my work but I think that the black photograph background works really well. It gives me a few ideas and has inspired me, maybe not as such for this project, but for future reference, I know that this kind of imagery can work so well as a background.

This poster caught my eye because of the style of typeface that they have used. I think that it works really well with the plain white background. I really like the imagery that has been used around the edge, I think that it gives the piece a lot of character and makes me think of a circus.

Brief

Preamble
Now that you are coming to the end of the first year you should be at a stage in your professional development at which we can assess your typographic skills. You now have an opportunity to re-work old pieces and to create new ones.
You are strongly advised to read the Learning Outcomes for the module, Graphic Design with Typography, and to look at any feedback sheets to know what are your areas of strength and weakness so that you can address these.
You will be working independently for much of this project as we wish to see how you generate and develop concepts on an independent basis. You can of course seek advice at all times.
Please submit all of the work listed below on Wednesday 16th May by 4pm .Late work will be capped at 40%.
You will be assessed on the whole of this module on Thursday 17th May.
The Brief
The brief is in three parts, of which you must complete at least two parts.
Part 3 is compulsory. You can also choose to do EITHER part 1 or 2.
Part 1:
You may re-work the pieces that you have already submitted for this module, using the skills that you have subsequently learnt to improve and develop the work.
These pieces are the typographic postcards for St Brides and the book jackets.
Please remember to re-submit the sketchbooks for these projects. You may add to these if you feel it necessary.
If you undertake this part please submit the original pieces as well as the new ones so that we can judge the difference.
You will be marked down if you have not addressed typos or other issues already raised by staff.
Part 2:
Undertake any small typographic project that you think will show off your skills. You may use imagery but typography must be the significant part.
This could be anything you choose, such as: a simple layout, set a poem or lyric, a typographic poster, a logo. Please discuss your choice with a tutor before you start.
You will need to write out a very short brief to say what you intend to do. You will need a sketchbook.
OR
On the website of Jonathan Barnbrook is a brief written by him that asks students to invent a new punctuation mark (brief 02).
You can find this at: http://www.edu.barnbrook.net/studentbriefs.html.  It is the second of the three briefs there.
.
Part 3
Create a poster that is a (mainly) typographic response to your visit to the Turner Contemporary and Margate in general. This poster could be commissioned/used by the local tourist board to promote art in Margate in general and at the Turner contemporary ion general. Please present this at A3 portrait format.
Specific Learning Outcomes
For all of these briefs you will need a SMALL sketchbook that answers these learning outcomes:
  • Explored and understood the practical constraints of a design brief
  • Produced and evaluated solutions to a design brief that encompasses set criteria
  • Explored and analysed the connotations of typeface choice and be able to justify decisions across a wide range of applications
  • Begun to demonstrate an awareness of contemporary typographic trends and innovative developments
  • Begun to develop their ability to solve design problems within the structure of a design brief
  • Raised awareness of the concepts and practice of graphic design needed to underpin the creative process
  • Begun to apply the practice of thorough and relevant research as an aid to the development of individual creativity
  • Begun to understand and use skill, and critical judgement when choosing and using type, which will allow creative freedom in their design solutions
